REFLECTING ON WEEK 2
The challenges for unit two has once again been a rewarding
experience. The transformation of an
activity to a learning mission was exciting and engaging for me. These emotions
will transition over to my students to allow them to enjoy completing the mission. Assessing
students with the use of letter or numeric grades has always been the favored
method of assessment. However with the constant changes in classroom
instruction we must also consider changes in assessment. One alternative to
consider is digital badging.
Using grades with our students may not give a “true”
indication if they have mastered the standard/concept. It might be they guessed
at the answer, copied the answer from someone else, or someone else completed the
task for them. Items can be attached to a digital badge as evidence of an accomplishment.
These may include an artifact (sample work, videos, reflections, etc.), aligned
with standards and teacher feedback.
The use of badges will allow the students to show pride in
their work and embrace ownership of their success.

CREATING A DIGITAL BADGE
The second challenge of week two was Creating a digital badge. This was an other exciting activity. I was able to create my first digital badge.

CREATING A LEARNING MISSION
The first challenge of week two (Creating a Learning Mission) encourages creativity and thinking "outside of the box". It was exciting to complete this challenge but it was also a challenge. In other words, trying to determine how to turn it into a meaningful mission. That is, which tools to use to achieve it’s intended purpose.
This mission was transformed by allowing the students to select
a location that begins with the same letter as their first name or last name.
They will also be asked to include at least four elements of their choice.
This will give the students a chance to have fun while
learning and using their creativity. Many times I feel we put restrictions on
our students because they are not afraid of stepping outside of the comfort zone.
We must give them a chance to take ownership of their learning.
